Speaker Comparison
Two American-made, high-sensitivity floorstanding speakers at nearly identical price points. The Signature SE uses Legacy's Air Motion Transformer; the Forte IV uses Klipsch's heritage horn design. Both are easy to drive. Both reward careful listening. But they sound notably different.

The Legacy Signature SE and Klipsch Forte IV both come from deep American audio heritage, but they represent fundamentally different approaches to the same goal: making music come alive in a home environment.
Legacy Audio, founded in Springfield, Illinois, builds speakers around the Air Motion Transformer, a folded-ribbon tweeter that delivers high-frequency detail with a speed and precision that conventional dome and horn tweeters cannot match. The Signature SE is the entry point to this technology.
Klipsch, founded in Hope, Arkansas, has been building horn-loaded speakers since 1946. The Forte IV continues this heritage with compression drivers on horn flares for both the tweeter and midrange, delivering the efficiency and dynamic immediacy that horn designs are celebrated for.
This is the defining difference between these two speakers, and the one most likely to determine which you prefer. Legacy's 4-inch Air Motion Transformer is a folded-ribbon transducer that squeezes air through pleats in a thin diaphragm. The result is treble that's exceptionally fast, detailed, and extended. Cymbals shimmer rather than splash, vocal sibilance is precise rather than harsh, and the spatial quality of recordings is presented with a three-dimensional clarity.
The Forte IV's titanium compression driver on a Tractrix horn produces treble with a different character: immediate, dynamic, and forward. Horns are inherently efficient, which gives the Forte IV its extraordinary 99 dB sensitivity rating. The trade-off is that horn-loaded treble has a directional quality and a tonal coloration that some listeners find exciting and others find fatiguing. The AMT's wider dispersion and lower coloration tend to produce a more relaxed, spacious presentation.
The Signature SE reaches down to 22Hz, genuinely deep bass from a speaker at this price point. Its dual 8-inch woofers in a ported enclosure reproduce the lowest organ pedal notes, the foundation of electronic music, and the subsonic information that gives concert recordings their sense of space and scale.
The Forte IV reaches 38Hz, respectable for a speaker using a passive radiator design, but it misses the bottom octave that the Signature SE covers. For music where deep bass matters (organ music, large-scale orchestral, electronic, hip-hop, and film soundtracks), the Signature SE's additional bass extension is meaningful. Forte IV owners who want full-range bass typically add a subwoofer, which adds cost and complexity to the system.
Both speakers are easy to drive, but the Forte IV takes efficiency to an extreme. At 99 dB sensitivity, it produces satisfying volume from amplifiers as small as 3-5 watts. This makes it a popular choice for single-ended triode (SET) amplifier enthusiasts who value the musical purity of very low-powered tube designs.
The Signature SE at 92 dB sensitivity is also easy to drive; 25 watts is sufficient for most rooms. But it doesn't reach the extreme efficiency of the Forte IV. For listeners with amplifiers in the 25-100 watt range (which covers the vast majority of quality tube and solid-state designs), both speakers will perform beautifully. The Forte IV's advantage is primarily relevant for those using very low-powered amplifiers.
Both speakers are well-built, but they take different approaches to finish and customization. The Signature SE offers Legacy's full range of Standard, Premium, and Exotic finish options, from natural hardwoods to high-gloss lacquer and custom veneers. If you want speakers that match specific furniture or interior design elements, Legacy provides that flexibility.
The Forte IV is available in a limited selection of real wood veneers. The finishes are attractive and well-executed, but the customization options are narrower than Legacy offers. For buyers who prioritize a specific aesthetic, Legacy's broader finish palette may be a factor.
One advantage of starting with the Signature SE is Legacy's coherent product lineup. Moving from the Signature SE to the Focus SE, Focus XD, Aeris XD, or Valor System is a progression within the same sonic family. The AMT tweeter technology and Legacy's voicing philosophy are consistent across the entire range, so upgrading means getting more of what you already love.
Klipsch also offers upgrade paths within their Heritage and Reference lines, though the jump from the Forte IV to Klipsch's higher-end models involves different driver technologies and design approaches. Both companies offer natural upgrade progressions; the question is which sonic signature you want to build on.
