The Calibre packed Legacy Audio's full-range philosophy into a bookshelf form factor. A three-way, three-driver system augmented by dual 8-inch mass-loaded passive radiators on opposing sides, the Calibre delivered bass extension to 38Hz without a port. The 4-inch AMT tweeter handled everything above 2.5kHz, a custom 7.5-inch accordion-edge midrange with a six-pound magnetic structure covered 200Hz to 2.5kHz, and an 8-inch extended-throw bass driver with a full inch of displacement took care of the rest. At 50 pounds each with a 1.75-inch thick front baffle, the Calibre was built like a small floorstander. Discontinued as of January 2026, it remains one of Legacy's most capable compact designs.
The Legacy Audio Calibre was a three-way bookshelf speaker that refused to accept the limitations of its size. Where most compact speakers rely on a two-way design and sacrifice either bass extension or midrange clarity, the Calibre used a dedicated driver for each frequency band: a 4-inch AMT tweeter above 2.5kHz, a custom 7.5-inch accordion-edge midrange from 200Hz to 2.5kHz, and an 8-inch extended-throw bass driver below 200Hz. Two 8-inch mass-loaded passive radiators mounted on opposing sides extended bass response to 38Hz without the port noise and turbulence that plague most compact designs.
Discontinued as of January 2026, the Calibre remains one of Legacy Audio's most capable compact speakers. This particular pair is in Black Pearl finish and available through In Depth Audio while supply lasts.
The decision to use three dedicated drivers instead of two gives the Calibre a significant advantage over conventional bookshelf speakers. The 7.5-inch midrange, built in Florence, Italy with a six-pound magnetic structure, handles the critical vocal and instrument range without being asked to simultaneously reproduce bass frequencies. This division of labor means lower distortion, higher dynamic range, and a midrange clarity that two-way designs struggle to match.
The 8-inch bass driver delivers a full inch of displacement capability, moving serious air for a speaker this size. Rather than a rear port, Legacy chose dual 8-inch mass-loaded passive radiators on opposing sides. This design cancels cabinet resonance while extending low-frequency output, producing bass that is tight, controlled, and free of the chuffing and port noise that compromise many ported designs at higher volumes.
At 50 pounds each, the Calibre weighs more than many floorstanding speakers. The mass comes from a 1.75-inch thick front baffle, heavy driver motors, and a cabinet built to eliminate resonance rather than cut costs. The speaker handles 500-watt peak inputs, meaning it has the headroom for dynamic musical passages without compression or strain.
With 90.5 dB sensitivity and a 4-ohm impedance, the Calibre pairs well with amplifiers from 45 to 400 watts. Dual five-way binding posts allow bi-amping for listeners who want separate amplification for the bass and mid/treble sections.
