The Classic HD is the entry point into Legacy Audio's passive floorstanding speaker range. A four-driver, three-way design pairs a 1-inch dual-pole AMT ribbon tweeter with a 7-inch graphene-filled carbon fiber midwoofer and dual 8-inch Silver/Graphite woven-diaphragm bass drivers. The Legacy Audio Classic HD at $8,000 per pair represents a remarkable achievement in loudspeaker engineering: a fully passive, full-range floorstanding speaker that delivers genuine deep bass, transparent midrange, and Legacy's signature Air Motion Transformer treble in a cabinet that stands just 44 inches tall. It's the speaker that introduced thousands of listeners to the Legacy sound, now refined with modern driver technology and cabinet engineering.
The Classic HD belongs to Legacy's Performance Collection Remastered series, products that take proven designs and update them with current-generation drivers, crossover components, and cabinet construction techniques. The result is a speaker that retains the musical character that made the original Classic a legend while delivering measurably better performance in every parameter.
The Classic HD uses a four-driver, three-way design that covers the full audible spectrum without the complexity or cost of powered bass sections. A 1-inch AMT ribbon tweeter handles the treble with the speed and detail that defines the Legacy sound. A 7-inch carbon fiber midrange driver delivers vocals and instruments with body and presence. Dual 8-inch Silver/Graphite woofers in a carefully tuned ported enclosure provide bass response down to 32Hz.
At 94 dB sensitivity, the Classic HD is remarkably easy to drive. It delivers satisfying volume levels with amplifiers as modest as 20 watts, which makes it an exceptional match for tube amplifiers, vintage receivers, and compact integrated amplifiers. You don't need a 200-watt powerhouse to make the Classic HD sing, though it will happily accept as much power as you want to feed it.
The crossover network uses high-quality film capacitors and air-core inductors selected for their low distortion and natural sonic character. The crossover points are set at frequencies where the transitions between drivers are least audible, creating a seamless presentation from the deepest bass to the highest harmonics.
The HD designation signals Legacy's latest generation of driver technology. The Silver/Graphite woofer cones combine lightweight rigidity with internal damping, producing bass that's fast, controlled, and free of the coloration that conventional paper or polypropylene cones can introduce. The carbon fiber midrange driver has the stiffness-to-weight ratio needed for clean, uncolored reproduction through the critical vocal range.
Cabinet construction uses multi-layer hardwood with internal bracing designed to eliminate panel resonances. At 84 pounds per speaker, the Classic HD has the mass and rigidity to serve as a stable, non-resonant platform for its drivers. The quality of cabinet construction is immediately apparent in the bass: tight, defined, and free of the boxy colorations that plague lesser speakers.
Available in Legacy's full range of finishes from natural hardwoods to high-gloss lacquer and exotic veneers, the Classic HD is built to be both an audio instrument and a piece of furniture. The compact 44-inch height makes it one of the more room-friendly options in Legacy's floorstanding lineup.
The Classic HD sits at an interesting position in the Legacy lineup. At $8,000, it offers fully passive simplicity: no internal amplifiers, no DSP, no digital processing. For listeners who want to pair their speakers with a specific amplifier and have complete control over the signal chain, the Classic HD's passive design is an advantage, not a limitation.
It's particularly well-suited for listeners who already own a quality integrated amplifier or receiver and want a significant speaker upgrade without changing their entire system. The Classic HD's high sensitivity and benign impedance characteristics mean it works beautifully with a wide range of amplification, from low-powered tubes to high-current solid-state.
For rooms between 200 and 500 square feet, the Classic HD provides enough bass authority that supplemental subwoofers are optional. In larger rooms or for home theater applications where the deepest bass extension is desired, the Classic HD pairs naturally with Legacy's Foundation or Goliath XD subwoofers.
