In home theater, the center channel handles 70% or more of the dialogue and on-screen action. Most center channel speakers are compromised designs, shrunken versions of the main speakers, with smaller drivers and limited bass extension that force the subwoofer to handle frequencies it was never meant to reproduce cleanly. The Legacy Audio Marquis at $7,500 is the antithesis of that approach.
The Marquis is a full-range, three-way passive speaker with a 4-inch Air Motion Transformer tweeter, a 7.5-inch accordion-edge midrange driver, and dual 12-inch ultra-linear bass drivers. It reaches down to 22Hz on its own, the same bass extension as many full-size floorstanding speakers. This means dialogue has chest and weight, explosions have foundation, and the transition between center and main speakers is seamless because the center isn't the weak link in the system.
Most home theater systems use a small center channel that crosses over to the subwoofer at 80Hz or higher. This means the subwoofer is reproducing not just bass effects but also the lower harmonics of male dialogue, cello, and other mid-frequency content. The problem is localization: bass from a subwoofer on the floor sounds different from bass coming from the screen, and the ear detects the disconnect even if the crossover is technically correct.
The Marquis eliminates this problem by handling the full frequency range from 22Hz to 30kHz. Dialogue is anchored to the screen with complete tonal integrity. The deep rumble of a spacecraft or the resonance of a concert hall comes from the center of the soundstage where the image is, not from a separate box on the floor. The result is a more convincing, more immersive home theater experience.
At 93 dB sensitivity, the Marquis is easy to drive with dedicated center channel amplification. It's biampable via dual binding post pairs, which allows advanced users to use separate amplifier channels for the bass and mid/treble sections for even greater control and dynamic range.
The Marquis is designed to match Legacy's floorstanding towers in a home theater system. Its 4-inch AMT tweeter is the same driver technology used in the Focus, Aeris, and Valor systems, ensuring tonal consistency across the front soundstage. When sound pans from left to right across the screen, the timbre remains constant because all three speakers use the same tweeter technology.
At 39.66 inches wide and 9.33 inches tall, the Marquis is sized for placement above or below a large screen. Its profile is designed to sit on a media cabinet or be shelf-mounted without blocking the bottom of the display. Despite the slim profile, it weighs 52 pounds. The mass comes from the dual 12-inch woofers and the heavy-duty cabinet construction.
For homeowners building dedicated theater rooms, the Marquis is the center channel that matches Legacy's ambitions. Paired with Aeris XD or Focus XD towers on the left and right, it creates a front soundstage with the coherence and authority that lesser center channels undermine.
